I am Myra Dorsey. I am originally from Virginia, and moved to Maryland in 1990 after receiving my master’s degree from The Ohio State University. My family and I have lived in Westminster for 17 years. I am a wife, mother, daughter, sister, teacher and friend. I enjoy many creative/artistic outlets including knitting, crocheting, sewing, crafting, upcycling clothes and furniture, and Cricutting. I ALWAYS have music playing, and I love to sing and dance. Laughing is my specialty!

Q: Please tell us a little bit about your family.

I have been married to my wonderful husband for 22 years. We are the proud parents of three adult male children ages 22, 21, and 19. My husband’s family is from Carroll County. I am from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?

I just completed my 26th school year as a licensed and certified Speech Language Pathologist working for Carroll County Public Schools. Interacting with my Elementary age students keeps me young at heart. Listening to what lies inside of their little souls fuels me every day. If you walk past my classroom, you will hear lots of talking, singing and laughter. I have found over my very long career that children learn best when they are happy and they feel loved. I truly love my students!

Q: What are a couple of your favorite places or events in our community?

This might sound strange, but Goodwill is my happy place. They play the best music, and I find myself doing a great deal of thinking and creating in my mind as I browse through the aisles. I also enjoy the Westminster library, and seeing friendly familiar faces as I run errands throughout the community.

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?

I am a true crime/documentary junkie. I don’t have a favorite movie, but there are movies from the 70’s and 80’s that I have seen SEVERAL times.

Q: What advice would you give to people?

Be kind, laugh more, relax, and PRAY. Find the good in people and situations. Tough love as a parent is KEY! Raise the bar high, set boundaries and give clear expectations to your children.

Q: What is your go to band when you can’t decide what to listen to?

Old school R&B

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?

I would reserve a table at Mediterraneo because I love the cheese pizza. My guest list would include Mr. and Mrs. Obama, Kevin Hart, my mother, my family, my closest friends, and my school team. We would eat, drink and laugh for hours.

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?

Small town living- I see someone I know everywhere I go.

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

I can hula hoop and jump on a pogo stick. I’m a pretty decent singer too.

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?

An unexpected school closure due to snow!

Q: Who inspires you to be better?

My three sons

Q: What 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?

Peace, love, family
